Hundreds apply to buy £1 houses

More than 600 people have applied to buy rundown homes in Stoke-on-Trent for £1 each, the city council has said.

Thirty five derelict homes, mainly two-bedroom terraced properties, will initially be sold off in the Cobridge area, with a further 89 to follow.

Under the £3m project, the local authority is offering loans of up to £30,000 to help complete essential repairs on the houses.

Watching homes under the hammer £30,000 seems like a good amount of money to do a house up to a decent standard, the rule being they have to commit to living in them for at least 5 years.

Good scheme, bad scheme not sure but I guess it will give people an opportunity to get on the housing ladder without having to take out massive mortgages.

Better than knocking them down, I think. I've often wondered why Councils don't offer more incentive for people to improve low grade housing.

With something like 70,000 empty properties in this country and a huge problem with people able to get into social housing or afford private rentals it would certainly go some way to help reduce the housing crisis.

Providing the right people get them. By that I mean those people struggling to get homes any other way, people who can't afford big mortgages etc.

Thats very important Ali......when a council estate was built in this area (the ONLY council estate that has been built for years) the houses were given to Asian immigrants, it is now like a ghetto, no whites, no mixes of different cultures, the few shops nearby are Asian, the nearby primary school has hardly any white kids attending....it's almost like a closed community now.

I wasn't thinking of stipulating between races Syl. I no more think these should go to all white people than I think they should go to all Asian/black/chinese etc

Horrible, horrible place! Probably the worst city in the UK. Hate it there!

Is that the people, the look of the place or what's there generally, shops, pubs, nightclubs etc?

Well as that is what happened in this area...and rightly caused a lot of discontentment within the community, thats what I thought of first.

Obviously the "right" people getting the houses should be the ones most in need and the ones who have waited on a council list for longest, regardless of colour or race.

Exactly, regardless of colour or race. Most in need is probably quite tenous because those are probably the least likely to be able to pay back a £30,000 loan, that's what's going to count in the end, finances, not who actually needs these houses.

I guess that all depends on whether it drags the area up enough or not.

True, also true is it could be a starting block for getting someone on their feet.
Long term it could save local councils fortunes in housing benefits too.

Well yeah, but I doubt your unemployed single mum will be one of those who end up with one of these houses.

Good idea.....but make sure they go to people who are intending to live in them....not builders or landlords.

The people who get them will have to live in them for a minimum of 5 years Jacey.
