Abortion may have prevented death

Post by Ali on Thu Apr 18, 2013 3:16 am

Anyone remember the case from Ireland of the woman who was refused a termination because the pregnancy was not a risk to her life?

An expert witness has told the Savita Halappanavar inquest that she may have survived if her pregnancy had been terminated days before her death.

What I find so sad about this case is that she was losing her 17 week pregnancy anyway but still the medics would not actively abort the fetus.

Because in Irish law it is a risk to life that is relevant and not a risk to health this womans requests were ignored but it would appear by the time the pregnancy did pose a risk to her life it would have been too late to save her if the pregnancy were aborted.

Very sad for all concerned.

The jury in this case have ruled 'Medical Misadventure' whatever that actually means.

Still not sure why they refused to abort even though it was obvious she was going to miscarry anyway. As the expert witness said this could have saved her life, ut I guess we will never know that for sure.

I would argue against negligent homicide because of the laws in ireland that forbid abortion unless the pregnancy is risking the life of the mother but I would go along with depraved indifference. She was miscarrying, the fetus was going to be lost anyway, the woman was sick, what was the point?

Well almost. We still have the 26 Lords Spiritual to deal with.

The equality act means that religion can't trump our secular laws and the parliament act can be used to over rule the un elected Lords chamber in our parliament.
